Records can avert home-buy disaster
By Denise L. Scott
Buyer beware.
It's a well-known warning for house-hunters making sure the roof doesn't leak and termites haven't hollowed out the walls.
A truly informed decision, however, requires digging much deeper than inspecting the structure of the house.
Are there plans to bring water and sewer service — and costly assessments — to the neighborhood?
Is the undisturbed mini-forest outside the bedroom window zoned to become a mini-mart?
Will airplanes rattle the windows or a road extension cut through the backyard?
It's all public information available through various government agencies. A good place for local homebuyers to start is Lee County's Web site.
