Alachua County's Resolution Dilemma - MultiVision USA and Pictometry Win, Taxpayers Lose

An article in The Gainesville Sun has detailed the recent disagreements between Alachua County's Property Appraiser, Ed Crapo, and the Growth Management Department during their pursuit of aerial imagery for the county.

Two winners were declared in the outcome as both MultiVision USA and Pictometry were each granted contracts. However, the losers appear to be the county taxpayers whom essentially spent hundreds of thousands of dollars for two copies of the same imagery, all over a few inches of resolution difference.

This very issue is all the more reason that initiatives, such as Florida’s Strategic Plan for Statewide Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Coordination, are pertinent efforts that everyone within the public and private sector need to get involved with.
